Algorithmic Governance and Democratic Participation: A Social Science Perspective on AI-Based Decision Making

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in governance systems across the world influencing public administration policy formulation service delivery and decision-making processes. Algorithmic governance refers to the use of automated systems machine learning models and data-driven technologies to support or replace human decision-making in governmental functions. While AI-based governance promises efficiency transparency accuracy and improved public services it also raises critical concerns regarding democratic participation accountability fairness privacy and social justice. From a social science perspective the increasing dependence on algorithmic systems has generated debates about the role of citizens in governance and the potential risks of excluding human judgment from public decision-making processes. This study examines the relationship between algorithmic governance and democratic participation by exploring the opportunities challenges and implications of AI-based decision-making in contemporary societies. The paper highlights how technological innovation can strengthen governance while emphasizing the importance of maintaining democratic values citizen engagement and institutional accountability in the digital age.
