An Analysis of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Surrogacy

Surrogacy has emerged as a significant pathway to parenthood enabling individuals and couples facing infertility or medical constraints to have children. This study critically examines the advantages and disadvantages of surrogacy encompassing medical ethical psychological social and legal dimensions with a particular focus on India between 2018 and 2020. Drawing on secondary sources such as peer-reviewed journals government reports institutional studies and legal documents the research investigates how surrogacy impacts intended parents surrogate mothers and children born through these arrangements. The advantages include reproductive autonomy fulfillment of parenthood aspirations medical safety under regulated protocols and socio-economic benefits for surrogate mothers. Conversely the study explores disadvantages including ethical concerns risk of exploitation psychological stress socio-economic disparities and legal ambiguities. By synthesizing empirical evidence from India and international contexts this research provides a nuanced understanding of surrogacy and its implications for policy development ethical practice and social integration. Recommendations are offered to optimize benefits while minimizing harms ensuring a balanced and responsible approach to surrogacy.
