Abstract
Banaras (Varanasi) renowned as a historic cultural and religious hub in India has long been recognized for its intricate handloom and weaving traditions particularly in silk production. The weavers of Banaras often referred to as the Banarasi weavers represent a community whose economic and social conditions reflect both the historical richness of artisanal heritage and contemporary challenges arising from industrialization globalization and socio-economic marginalization. Prior to 2021 extensive studies have explored the multiple dimensions of the weavers’ lives including livelihood patterns caste and community structures gender dynamics market engagement labor practices and cultural identity. This research aims to provide a detailed holistic examination of the economic and social conditions of Banaras weavers highlighting the interplay between traditional craftsmanship and modern economic pressures.
