Abstract
The rapid expansion of information technology since the beginning of the twenty-first century has transformed the structure functioning service delivery professional identity and future trajectory of India’s Library and Information Science (LIS) profession. With technological infrastructures entering every domain of knowledge creation dissemination and preservation Indian libraries have undergone a paradigm shift from conventional manual systems to digitally empowered service ecosystems. This transformation includes the adoption of integrated library management systems digital repositories online public access catalogues cloud-based information services RFID-based circulation automated indexing metadata-driven knowledge organisation and virtual reference environments. The abstract establishes the core premise that information technology has not merely modernised Indian libraries it has redefined the concept of information work itself by reshaping professional competencies workflow designs user expectations institutional priorities and knowledge management strategies.
