AN ANALYSIS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN THE CONTEXT OF HONOUR FROM A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract
Violence against women in the name of honour continues to be a pervasive social and legal challenge across multiple countries particularly in regions where patriarchal norms and rigid social structures dominate. Honour-based violence (HBV) manifests in various forms including physical assault psychological abuse forced marriage and in extreme cases murder. Such acts are often justified under the guise of protecting family or community honour undermining the autonomy and fundamental rights of women. This research paper examines violence against women in the context of honour from a legal perspective analyzing statutory frameworks judicial interpretations and enforcement challenges. It explores the extent to which existing legislation addresses HBV the efficacy of preventive mechanisms and the gaps in legal protection and social awareness. By integrating qualitative and quantitative analyses of case studies judicial rulings and statutory provisions the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how law interacts with sociocultural norms surrounding honour-based violence. Furthermore the paper investigates how legal systems can better prevent HBV ensure access to justice for survivors and reconcile the tension between cultural practices and human rights. The findings intend to inform policy reforms strengthen law enforcement mechanisms and enhance societal awareness of the legal implications of honour-based violence.
