Author(s): Dr. Mahesh KumarAbstract
This paper presents an analytical and historical exploration of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s impact on Indian democracy. It examines their differing visions strategies and legacies which have shaped India’s democratic ethos. Gandhi as a leader of the Indian independence movement emphasized non-violence grassroots mobilization and the concept of Swaraj (self-rule). His belief in decentralized democracy and moral politics influenced the socio-political fabric of the nation. Ambedkar on the other hand emerged as the voice of the marginalized particularly Dalits advocating for social justice legal reform and equal rights. His contributions to the Indian Constitution and his critique of caste oppression provided a framework for an inclusive democracy. The paper delves into their ideological conflicts particularly on issues like caste and the nature of political power. While Gandhi sought reform within the caste system Ambedkar called for its complete abolition highlighting the need for systemic change for true democratic equality. The historical narrative assesses how these two towering figures despite their differences collectively contributed to the democratic project of modern India. The analysis extends to their long-lasting influence on Indian political thought social movements and the ongoing struggle for social justice. This paper argues that the synthesis of Gandhi’s emphasis on moral politics and Ambedkar’s focus on legal justice forms the dual pillars of India’s democracy each addressing different facets of freedom and equality in a diverse and stratified society.
