Dating App Culture and Its Impact on Commitment in Indian Youth

With the advent of smartphones and digital connectivity dating apps like Tinder Bumble Hinge and TrulyMadly have become a significant part of the romantic lives of Indian youth. These platforms designed to simplify matchmaking and enable casual or serious connections have transformed the landscape of modern relationships in India. This paper explores how dating app culture is reshaping the meaning and practice of romantic commitment among Indian youth particularly in urban and semi-urban settings. Using qualitative interviews app usage analysis and sociocultural observation the research uncovers a shifting trend from long-term exclusivity to experimentation ambiguity and non-monogamous tendencies. While dating apps promote autonomy and exposure to diverse partners they also create a paradox of abundance and emotional fatigue. The study argues that dating app culture while democratizing romantic choices challenges conventional ideas of commitment and intimacy prompting a reevaluation of emotional values relationship expectations and interpersonal responsibility among Indian youth.
