Digital Memory and Cultural Identity: The Role of Social Media Archives in Preserving Community Histories

Abstract
The rapid expansion of digital technologies has transformed the ways in which communities create preserve and share their cultural memories. Social media platforms have emerged as significant repositories of collective experiences allowing individuals and groups to document everyday life cultural practices social movements traditions and historical events in real time. These digital archives contribute to the construction and preservation of cultural identity by providing accessible spaces where memories are recorded exchanged and revisited. Unlike traditional archives that are often controlled by institutions social media archives enable participatory preservation allowing marginalized and local communities to represent their own histories. At the same time challenges related to data ownership privacy technological obsolescence and misinformation raise important concerns regarding the long-term reliability of these archives. This study explores the relationship between digital memory and cultural identity examining how social media archives function as tools for preserving community histories and shaping collective remembrance in contemporary society.
