Abstract
The evolution of women’s rights in India reflects a journey from subjugation to empowerment. This paper explores the socio-legal milestones from the abolition of Sati to the enactment of the Domestic Violence Act and the rise of feminist movements. It examines the interplay of patriarchy education and economic participation in shaping women’s roles in society. Through a historical and contemporary lens the study evaluates initiatives such as reservation for women in local governance and their impact on political participation. By highlighting achievements and persistent barriers the paper underscores the transformative potential of legal frameworks education and activism in achieving gender equity.
