Abstract
This paper examines the state of gender equality in higher education institutions (HEIs) of India tracing progress challenges and future possibilities within the framework of social justice and sustainable development. Gender equality in higher education is not only a constitutional mandate but also a prerequisite for inclusive national growth. India with its vast network of universities and colleges has made significant strides in expanding women’s access to higher education over the past few decades. From being historically excluded women now form a substantial portion of students in higher education. Yet structural inequalities cultural barriers and institutional biases continue to persist. This study situates the issue of gender equality in Indian HEIs within global commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 and 5) national policies like the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the evolving discourse on equity in academia. Drawing upon government reports academic literature and case studies the paper explores student enrollment faculty representation leadership participation and gender-sensitive policy initiatives. The analysis argues that while progress has been significant true gender equality in higher education requires systemic reforms cultural transformation and sustained institutional accountability.
