Author(s): Mr. Ajay Rathi

Abstract
This paper critically examines gender representation in Indian cinema between 2018 and 2025 a period of significant transformation in the film industry due to the influence of streaming platforms changing audience preferences social movements and evolving gender discourses. Indian cinema has long been criticized for perpetuating stereotypes objectifying women and underrepresenting diverse gender identities. However the last decade has witnessed both continuity and change. Films and web series increasingly highlight women as central protagonists engage with issues of gender justice and challenge patriarchal narratives. At the same time the industry continues to face criticism for tokenism lack of representation behind the camera and persistent reliance on commercialized stereotypes. This paper analyzes trends in female-led films portrayal of masculinity LGBTQ+ representation and the role of digital platforms in diversifying narratives. It argues that while Indian cinema from 2018–2025 reflects gradual progress toward gender inclusivity structural challenges in the industry continue to limit transformative change.
