Humour Satire and Political Resistance in Democratic Societies

Abstract
Humour and satire have long served as powerful instruments of political expression and resistance in democratic societies. Through comedy caricature parody and ironic commentary citizens and intellectuals challenge political authority expose corruption and encourage public debate. Democratic systems which are founded on freedom of expression and civic participation provide fertile ground for the development of satirical discourse. Political humour often functions as a non-violent mechanism of resistance enabling individuals to criticize leaders institutions and policies while simultaneously engaging broader audiences. In contemporary society digital media platforms have expanded the reach and influence of satirical content transforming humour into a significant component of political communication. This study explores the relationship between humour satire and political resistance in democratic societies by examining their historical evolution social functions and contemporary manifestations. The research highlights how satire contributes to democratic accountability political awareness and citizen engagement while also addressing the challenges associated with censorship misinformation and political polarization.
