Inclusive Education and Disability Rights: The Indian Context
Author(s): Ram ParshadAbstract
Inclusive education which emphasizes the participation of all learners regardless of ability or disability has become a global commitment under frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In India where millions of children and youth live with physical sensory intellectual or learning disabilities inclusive education is not only a pedagogical necessity but also a human rights imperative. Over the last two decades legislative reforms such as the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016) and policy frameworks including the National Education Policy (2020) have sought to promote inclusive practices. However the reality on the ground reflects persistent barriers of access infrastructure social stigma and inadequate teacher training.
