Inequality and Economic Growth: Reassessing Development Models in South Asia
Author(s): Vivak Katariya

Abstract
In the decades since economic liberalization South Asia has experienced significant economic growth. However this growth has not uniformly translated into reduced inequality or inclusive development. The coexistence of rising GDP figures with persistent or even widening disparities in income wealth and access to basic services raises questions about the adequacy and sustainability of prevailing development models in the region. This paper re-examines the growth-centric development paradigm in South Asia with a focus on its implications for socio-economic inequality. It analyses trends in economic performance explores the structural causes of inequality evaluates policy responses and considers alternative frameworks for equitable development. By contextualizing regional disparities within the broader narrative of globalization and neoliberal reforms the study aims to assess whether current strategies are capable of achieving inclusive growth or whether a fundamental rethinking of development priorities is required.
