Masculinity in Crisis: Impact of Feminist Discourse on Male Mental Health

Abstract
In recent decades feminist discourse has played a pivotal role in challenging patriarchal structures and advocating for gender equality. However as this discourse gains prominence in public academic and media spheres questions have emerged regarding its unintended psychological impact on male identity and mental health. This paper explores the evolving crisis of masculinity in contemporary India and investigates how men—particularly younger generations—are responding to shifting gender norms and feminist narratives. Drawing on interviews psychological assessments sociological theories and media analysis the research examines the emotional strain confusion and identity conflicts faced by men in reconciling traditional expectations of masculinity with the demands of an increasingly egalitarian world. The findings reveal that while feminist discourse challenges toxic gender roles beneficially it can also trigger defensiveness guilt and anxiety among men who lack guidance in navigating this new terrain. The paper advocates for inclusive dialogues that prioritize male mental health without diluting feminist objectives thereby fostering healthier and more emotionally resilient masculinities.
