Author(s): Chetan KumarAbstract
Panchayati Raj institutions (PRIs) are a cornerstone of decentralized governance in India promoting grassroots participation and accountability. This paper examines the evolution and functioning of PRIs across Indian states focusing on their role in empowering marginalized communities. It highlights case studies of successful implementations in Kerala and Rajasthan analyzing their impact on service delivery resource management and local decision-making. The study also addresses challenges such as political interference and financial constraints that hinder effective decentralization. By drawing lessons from diverse experiences the paper underscores the potential of PRIs to strengthen democracy and drive sustainable development in rural and semi-urban areas.
