Author(s): Dr. Vidhi GrewalAbstract
The term Akhand Bharat refers to the idea of a united Indian subcontinent including present-day India Pakistan Bangladesh and sometimes additional neighbouring nations such as Nepal Sri Lanka Bhutan and Afghanistan. This concept is based on the belief that these areas have a shared cultural historical and civilisational background. Patels interpretations of Akhand Bharat as expressed by different political and cultural figures in India usually highlight the following fundamental elements: - Historical and Cultural Unity: This concept is rooted on the view that the Indian subcontinent has a shared history and culture and was a unified entity in terms of civilisation. It emphasises the common customs dialects and religious rituals that transcend contemporary geopolitical divisions. - Akhand Bharat is largely a cultural term but it may also be seen as having a political goal of reunion or increased integration among the nations of the subcontinent. Nevertheless this concept is a subject of debate and is mostly seen as an ambitious goal rather than a specific political agenda. - The concept of Akhand Bharat is often mentioned in discussions on Indian nationalism. It symbolises a vision of India that is not just proud of its history but also aspires to play a significant role in the region and the globe in the future. - The idea of Akhand Bharat is sometimes used in current political discussions especially by certain Hindu nationalist factions to proclaim a vision of Indian identity that aims to go beyond the boundaries established under colonial rule. Akhand Bharat is mostly a symbolic and ideological term rather than a real policy objective. It is worth noting that there are ongoing debates and varying interpretations of this concept among Indian political and intellectual circles.
