Political Freedom vs. Authoritarianism: A Comparative Analysis of Emergency and Present-Day Governance in India

Abstract
The Emergency of 1975-77 and present-day governance in India offer contrasting narratives of democracy and authoritarianism. This paper compares the socio-political context governance style and public responses during both periods. It examines the suspension of civil liberties media censorship and judicial overreach under the Emergency and evaluates similar trends in contemporary politics such as crackdowns on dissent and freedom of speech. By analyzing historical records policy measures and public discourse the study highlights the resilience of democratic institutions and the importance of safeguarding them against authoritarian tendencies. The paper concludes with lessons from history to navigate contemporary political challenges.
