Author(s): Prof. Santosh MehrotraAbstract
The critical role of education in fostering democratic citizenship has transformed societies worldwide particularly in developing nations where unequal access to quality schooling has historically limited civic participation and social cohesion. Civic education programmes including school curricula on rights and responsibilities interactive classroom discussions global citizenship modules and community-based learning initiatives have opened new pathways for individuals to acquire the knowledge skills values and attitudes essential for active democratic engagement. In recent decades governments and educational institutions have promoted citizenship-focused pedagogies to strengthen democratic values reduce social exclusion and enhance transparency in governance. The integration of education for democracy has proven especially vital in countries with diverse populations and limited civic awareness where traditional rote-learning systems often fail to prepare citizens for participatory roles. By delivering inclusive participatory and values-driven learning experiences education has contributed to greater civic literacy increased voter turnout improved tolerance and stronger commitment to democratic institutions among marginalized groups. At the same time the expansion of citizenship education has generated profound social changes influencing patterns of political behaviour community involvement and ethical decision-making across societies. Educational practices have empowered women youth rural communities and disadvantaged sections by equipping them with tools for critical thinking dialogue and collective action. However persistent challenges such as educational inequality rote-learning dominance teacher training gaps and limited access to participatory pedagogies continue to restrict the full potential of education in building democratic citizenship. This research paper examines the social impact of education on democratic citizenship focusing on its role in expanding civic awareness promoting active participation and reshaping socio-political structures in contemporary societies.
