Abstract
Disasters—both natural and man-made—pose significant challenges to human security livelihoods and development across the globe. In India a country highly prone to floods cyclones droughts earthquakes and industrial accidents disaster management has been a critical component of public policy. While government agencies play a central role in disaster response non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have emerged as vital actors in relief rehabilitation and long-term recovery. Their flexibility grassroots reach and ability to mobilize resources quickly allow NGOs to address the immediate needs of affected populations while also engaging in advocacy capacity-building and resilience planning.
