Role of NGOs in Environmental Sustainability in India

Abstract
This paper examines the significant role played by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in advancing environmental sustainability in India between 2015 and 2025. NGOs have emerged as critical actors in supplementing state policies mobilizing communities conducting environmental education and promoting grassroots innovations. From afforestation campaigns and waste management programs to climate change adaptation and renewable energy advocacy NGOs have contributed to bridging the gap between policy frameworks and ground-level implementation. Their work complements national initiatives such as the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while also addressing local challenges such as deforestation water scarcity and air pollution. The paper explores how NGOs influence environmental governance through advocacy awareness and partnerships with government and international bodies.
