Self-Help Groups and Women’s Empowerment: A Socio-Economic Analysis

Women’s empowerment is recognized as a cornerstone of social justice economic development and democratic participation. In India Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as a transformative instrument for promoting women’s empowerment by combining microfinance collective solidarity and capacity building. Since their widespread adoption in the 1990s SHGs have provided millions of women with access to credit savings and livelihood opportunities while also fostering confidence leadership and participation in community decision-making.
