Skill Development Programs and Employment Generation in India

This paper explores the role of skill development programs in fostering employment generation in India between 2015 and 2025. With one of the world’s largest youth populations India faces both an opportunity and a challenge: to transform its demographic dividend into productive human capital. Skill development initiatives have emerged as central strategies to address the mismatch between education and employability especially in sectors such as manufacturing information technology agriculture and services. Flagship programs like the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) Skill India Mission and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) have aimed at equipping youth with industry-relevant skills. While these programs have created millions of training opportunities gaps remain in quality inclusivity and job placement. This study examines policy frameworks program implementation sectoral impacts and challenges arguing that effective skill development can be a transformative driver of employment and inclusive growth if integrated with local needs industry participation and digital innovations.
