Social Impact of Smart Cities on Urban Inequality
Author(s): Prof. Ghanshyam ShahAbstract
The concept of smart cities has emerged as a transformative approach to urban development integrating digital technologies data analytics and sustainable practices to improve the quality of life for urban residents. However while smart city initiatives promise efficiency innovation and inclusivity their social impact on urban inequality remains a critical area of concern. This research paper examines the complex relationship between smart city development and urban inequality focusing on how technological advancement can both bridge and widen socio-economic divides. It explores key dimensions such as access to digital infrastructure governance models spatial segregation economic opportunities and public service delivery. The study highlights that although smart cities can enhance service efficiency and citizen participation they often risk reinforcing existing inequalities due to uneven access to technology exclusion of marginalized communities and privatization of urban spaces. By critically analyzing theoretical perspectives and empirical patterns this paper argues that without inclusive planning and equitable policy frameworks smart city initiatives may deepen disparities rather than reduce them. The study aims to contribute to the discourse on sustainable and inclusive urbanization by proposing strategies for socially just smart city development.
