Social Media and the Rise of Digital Activism in India

Abstract
This paper examines the phenomenon of digital activism in India highlighting the role of social media platforms in mobilizing voices shaping public debates and influencing political and social outcomes between 2015 and 2025. Social media has transformed the way activism operates by lowering barriers of participation amplifying marginalized voices and enabling decentralized networks of protest and advocacy. From the #MeToo movement and environmental campaigns to student protests farmers’ mobilization and gender justice movements digital platforms such as Twitter (X) Instagram Facebook and YouTube have become powerful tools of civic engagement. At the same time digital activism faces challenges of misinformation polarization online harassment and limited offline translation of symbolic participation. This study analyzes the opportunities and risks of digital activism showing how it complements traditional activism but also reshapes the relationship between citizens the state and democratic institutions in India.
