Author(s): Om Prakash SwamiAbstract
Social movements have played a crucial role in shaping Indian politics by influencing policies challenging societal norms and fostering democratic participation. These movements whether rooted in economic social or political grievances have historically acted as a force for change. From pre-independence movements like the Indian National Movement to contemporary agitations such as the farmers protests and anti-corruption campaigns they have remained instrumental in questioning state authority demanding accountability and advocating for marginalized communities. The ability of social movements to mobilize the masses has significantly contributed to policy shifts and institutional reforms that have shaped India’s democratic trajectory. Beyond traditional forms of activism social movements in India have evolved to adapt to modern technological advancements. The rise of digital platforms and social media has facilitated the rapid dissemination of information leading to wider public engagement and greater global solidarity. Movements such as the Nirbhaya protests CAA-NRC protests and the recent farmers agitation have demonstrated the power of digital activism in amplifying voices garnering international attention and pressuring the government to respond. However digital platforms also present new challenges such as misinformation online censorship and the co-optation of movements by political forces seeking electoral gains.
