The portrayal of female characters in Hindi cinema has undergone significant transformation since the early days of Indian filmmaking. Historically female characters were often relegated to stereotypical roles primarily defined by familial obligations romantic interests or social morality. Over the decades however there has been a marked evolution in how women are represented on screen reflecting broader socio-cultural changes feminist movements and shifts in audience sensibilities. This study explores the evolving identities of female characters in Hindi films examining the trajectory from traditional portrayals to contemporary representations that highlight agency individuality and complex social realities.
