The Involvement of Women in Indias Participatory Urban Local Governance
Author(s): Dr. J. P. Singh

Abstract
As a key component in improving democratic processes and urban development womens participation in participatory urban local government in India has grown in importance. Focussing on womens involvement in decision-making policy-making and implementation this research analyses their contributions and influences on urban municipal government institutions in India. The presence of women in urban government is alarmingly low even though there are constitutional requirements and legal structures in place to promote gender equality. Combining survey data with qualitative information gleaned from in-depth interviews and case studies this study employs a mixed-methods strategy. While affirmative action programs have helped boost womens involvement the study found that substantial obstacles like ingrained cultural norms a lack of funding and insufficient institutional support still stand in the way. Improving training programs increasing access to resources and strengthening legislative frameworks are some of the suggestions made to increase womens participation in municipal government which the report outlines alongside successful examples of such involvement. Gender equality and efficient city administration in India are topics that this study adds to by stressing the need of inclusive government.
