The Political Economy of Digital Payments and Financial Inclusion in Semi-Urban India

The rapid expansion of digital payment systems has transformed the financial landscape of India particularly after initiatives such as Digital India Unified Payments Interface (UPI) Aadhaar-enabled payment systems and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. These developments have significantly influenced financial inclusion by expanding access to banking and digital financial services among previously underserved populations. Semi-urban India occupies a crucial position in this transformation because it represents a transitional space between rural and urban economies characterized by increasing digital connectivity and growing economic activities. This study examines the political economy of digital payments and their contribution to financial inclusion in semi-urban India. The research explores the role of government policies technological innovations financial institutions and market actors in promoting digital financial ecosystems. It further investigates opportunities and challenges associated with digital adoption including digital literacy infrastructure limitations and cybersecurity concerns. The study highlights the broader socio-economic implications of digital finance for inclusive and sustainable development in India.
