Abstract
The Revolt of 1857 often referred to as India’s First War of Independence was a watershed moment in the country’s colonial history. While the role of princely states sepoys and notable leaders is well-documented the contributions of local communities remain underexplored. Farmers artisans traders religious groups and village panchayats played a crucial role in supporting the rebellion either through active participation financial aid intelligence sharing or logistical support. This paper re-examines the role of local communities in the 1857 uprising analyzing their motivations contributions and the impact of their involvement. Through historical records oral traditions and archival research this study aims to highlight how grassroots movements shaped the larger resistance against British colonial rule.
