Abstract
Everyone over the age of 21 allowed to cast a ballot in the 1951 general election regardless of their gender race class or language. In the 1950s when everyone else was predicting that Indias attempt at democracy and free elections would fail it succeeded. All eyes have been on India recently. Ram Guha describes the events surrounding Nehrus decision to hold the 1st Lok Sabha election in the midst of major world events such as the French fighting the Viet Minh the United States advancing its troops in the Korean Peninsula the disenfranchised Cape Coloured people being led by the African National Party the assassinations of the prime ministers of Iran and Jordan the testing of the hydrogen bomb by the United States and the daylight shooting of Pakistans prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan in our neighbourhood . A recently independent nation like India is destined to fail for many reasons. Having successfully conducted 18 successive Lok Sabha elections in spite of all the concerns is an accomplishment to be proud of.
