Transformation of Traditional Family Structures Due to Social Media: An Indian Context
Author(s): Madhuri KashyapAbstract
The rapid expansion of social media has redefined communication patterns and interpersonal relationships resulting in significant shifts in traditional family structures. In the Indian context—where familial bonds cultural norms and intergenerational relationships have long been the cornerstone of societal organization—this phenomenon introduces both challenges and opportunities. This paper investigates the multifaceted impacts of social media on traditional Indian family dynamics. It examines how platforms such as Facebook WhatsApp Instagram and others have reconfigured communication within households altered the authority structures traditionally upheld by elders and influenced the roles of younger generations. Employing a mixed-methods approach that combines a review of existing literature with qualitative insights drawn from case studies and interviews the study reveals that social media both democratizes family communication and contributes to generational gaps and digital dependency. The paper concludes with recommendations for families educators and policymakers to balance the integration of modern digital communication with the preservation of beneficial traditional practices.
