Utilisation and Availability of Open Source Software in Bookshops
Author(s): Vibhuti SinghAbstract
The rapid proliferation of knowledge in our current digital age is placing a burden on the library resources that were previously available to us. Due to the closed-access approach of vendors and the decreasing finances libraries are actively searching for alternatives to proprietary software. Open source software (OSS) enables libraries and information centres to save costs while keeping up with their technical requirements. The use of this approach as a technique for developing software is seeing a significant and rapid increase. The study examines the advantages and disadvantages of using an open source technology. By prioritising open source open access and open standard practices the library industry can underscore the significance of being transparent and accessible. Furthermore when establishing a digital library with restricted resources open source software is more desirable than commercial software. Libraries and research organisations already extensively use open source software (OSS). An institutional repository may function as a digital archive for all research output produced by the academic staff of an institute. This is one of the several objectives that can be accomplished by establishing it inside a knowledge resource centre. Here we examine a selection of the most renowned open source software programs that are now available on the internet.
