Veer Savarkars philosophical views on the status of Hindu Women
Author(s): Sudha NarangAbstract
Veer Savarkars philosophical perspectives on the status of Hindu women demonstrate a nuanced interaction between traditional and contemporary values. Savarkar a significant player in the Indian independence struggle and a proponent of Hindutva campaigned for the advancement of Hindu society including the improvement of womens position. He advocated for the revival of what he saw as the time-honoured splendour of Hindu civilization which he said had been undermined by foreign incursions and colonial governance. His perspective on women was shaped by his desire to restore what he saw to be a glorious era of Hindu civilization. Savarkars stance on womens concerns was characterized by a blend of conventional principles and forward-thinking concepts. On one side Savarkar saw the need of implementing social changes to enhance the position of women which included campaigning for the elimination of customs like as child marriage and endorsing womens education. He saw these measures as crucial for strengthening Hindu society. However his perspectives were also influenced by a commitment to uphold conventional Hindu values and traditions which sometimes restricted the scope of his reformist goals. Savarkars worldview offers a complex viewpoint in which the growth of women is seen in the context of enhancing Hindu identity and culture. This perspective encompasses both progressive and conservative aspects in his approach to gender matters.
